Turner House Receives Much-Needed Facelift

The downstairs wood floors were in desperate need of replacement. Here, a worker cleans up the remnants of the old floor in the side hallway.

Not only was a new oak floor put in the parlor, the old, faded wallpaper was stripped and the walls repaired were painted.

The restoration process involved removing a stage in the main room that had been built for church services in the 1940s. Once the stage was removed, board members discovered an old fireplace that had been filled and plastered over.

(8/1/12) The parlor's old floor was replaced with a new oak floor and faded wallpaper was stripped and the walls were repaired and painted. This couch and two chairs were also given to Turner House by a private donor.

(8/1/12) Brides who get married at Turner House can now walk down this elegant 100-year-old wooden staircase versus the old dingy carpet that lined the stairs for decades.

(8/1/12) When the old, filthy carpet lining the staircase was removed, the house's original 100-year-old wood flooring was revealed.

(8/1/12) Board members reaffixed the copper canopy that belonged to the fireplace in the main hall.

The dingy carpet lining the staircase was removed to reveal the stairs' beautiful 100-year-old wooden treads.

Board members decided to proceed with breaking through the wooden facade that hid the original brick-lined gas firplace. If you look carefully, you can see the outline of where the fireplace's canopy had been.

(8/1/12) Winnetka Heights Hall, named in honor of the neighborhood who dontated $10,000 for the restorations, received a new oak foor and fresh paint. The house's original brick-lined gas fireplace was also discovered behind a stage that had been erected in the 1940s for church services.
