People’s Choice Spotlight: Charco Broiler & Tillman’s Roadhouse

Best Steakhouse (TIE)

Charco Broiler: We’d expect any restaurant that has a giant cow perched atop its roof to know a thing or two about steak, and Charco Broiler doesn’t disappoint. This familyowned business prides itself on serving quality steaks at budget prices, and with prime cuts ringing in under $14, it certainly does just that.

Tillman’s Roadhouse: This steakhouse has been providing the community with updated regional favorites since 1992. One thing that hasn’t changed since the transition from Tillman’s Corner, however, is the quality of the food. Tillman’s still serves the same juicy and flavorful steaks that became its signature two decades ago.

Best Festival: Bastille on Bishop

The Bishop Arts District sees many festivals every year, but none are more beloved than this celebration of France’s independence and revolution. With events ranging from mussel cook-of s to French maid relays and games of petanque (all experienced with generous amounts of wine, naturally), we’re already excited for this summer’s celebration.

People’s Choice Spotlight: Vet Stop Animal Clinic

Best Veterinarian: Vet Stop Animal Clinic (1221 N. Beckley Ave)

One of our reporters (who didn’t vote, mind you) has seen Dr. Vladi Dejong charm a fearful ball of hair and claws right out of a cat carrier and onto an exam table, then deliver a round of shots without prompting so much as a fl inch. Rare stuff . The staff never seems to turn over at this small neighborhood clinic, which has quick appointment scheduling and often little to no waiting — make that whimpering — time in the lobby.

People’s Choice Spotlight: Texas Theater

Staff Photo: Oak Cliff People

Best Movie Theater: Texas Theatre

It seemed that the public had all but forgotten this piece of Jef erson Avenue history, until Aviation Cinemas took over the lease and breathed new life back into its dusty rafters. In just a couple years, the company has begun the process of restoring the theater to its former glory days by showing an impressive selection of indie fi lms, superhero blockbusters, and zany performances.

People’s Choice Spotlight: Dr. Darryl Curry

Best Doctor: Dr. Darryl Curry

Dr. Curry has been treating aching tummmies around Oak Clif  since 1986. In fact, some of his former patients have kids of their own now. He’s loathe to call his work as a pediatrician a “job,” saying that he has too much fun to consider what he does work. Fortunately for the community, Dr. Curry doesn’t plan to retire anytime soon; he can’t imagine a day without the tiny patients who he says are fun-loving and inspirational, even when sick.
