  • What’s Cookin’ in The Cliff

It’s a little wet out there today, folks. Your best bet is to find someplace with some good bites and good beer.

In that vein, Kings Highway Conservation District is having their happy hour tonight at 6 p.m. Head over to 635 N. Montclair Ave. for the festivities.

Also at 6 p.m. this evening, Oak Cliff Cultural Center will open a new exhibit called “Concrete Roses.” See the powerful work of Mark Crow and Violet Gutierrez tonight.

Itching for a case of the heebie jeebies? The Texas Theatre will screen “The Innkeepers” tonight starting at 6 p.m.

Are you planning on writing a love letter to your valentine? Earn extra points with calligraphy. Tonight at 6:30 p.m., Oil and Cotton will show you how to master pen and ink for your loved one.

Do you miss Bar 828? Michael Martensen’s Hid In 2612 opens tonight at 8 p.m. in the lounge space next to Jay Jerrier’s Cane Rosso in Deep Ellum. I know, it’s in Deep Ellum, but Amy Cowan assures me that there will be plenty of Oak Cliff folks headed out. Besides that, it’s only open for four evenings, unless you’re one of the lucky few who booked the spot for a private event.

There’s so much going on this weekend, so let’s just hit the highlights:

“Five Photographers” opens at 6 p.m. Saturday at Haley-Henman Gallery.

Stevens Park Estates Neighborhood Association is hosting their membership party at 1943 W. Colorado Blvd. The fun starts at 7 p.m.

The Kessler will be underwater with great Texas acts, including The O’s, Warren Hood & The Goods, and Gaston Light. Doors open at 6, seats at 7, Show at 8 p.m.

If the Super Bowl’s not your thing, perhaps you should try your hand at crafting felted flowers at Oil and Cotton this at 3 p.m. Sunday.

If the Super Bowl is your thing, the Texas Theatre is showing the game on it’s big screen starting at 5 p.m. Head upstairs for Kimono Club, where they’ll be showing “Female Convict Scorpion: Jailhouse 41″ at 8 p.m. There’s plenty of sake and karaoke to go around.

Did we miss your event? Leave a comment!

  • Studio 410 Can Help You Keep Up With The Kardashians

Perhaps you’ve always envied the long locks of the three Kardashian sisters. Perhaps you stare into your mirror, brushing your tresses, imagining they were shiny and bouncy, just like Kim K.’s.

OK, maybe I went overboard with that last part, but in any case, the stylists at Studio 410 are here to help.

You can sign up for their “Blueprint to Kardashian Hair” at 10 a.m. Sunday for an education on how to shape strands that rival newly transplanted Dallas resident Khloe Kardashian.

The course will set you back $45, which includes the “Art on Hair” education 2012 handbook and a swag bag. Students should bring models for hands-on demonstrations. If you just want to sit in on the workshop, the price is $25.

    For more information, call  214-942-1260.

  • OC Chamber Wants to Send YOU to China

    The Great Wall of China

The Oak Cliff Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Chamber Explorations, invites you to take the trip of a lifetime on an all-inclusive trip to China. On Nov. 4, travelers will set off for a 10-day exploration of Beijing, Hangzhou, and Shanghai.

You’ll get to check out the world-famous Great Wall of China, soak up ancient Chinese history, and sample exotic Eastern cuisine. In Beijing, you’ll tour notable sites, including the Temple of Heaven, Tiananmen Square, the ancient royal summer palace, and the mysterious Forbidden City. After exploring the Great Wall, take the scenic route to Hangzhou and enjoy a West Lake boat cruise. In Shanghai, the nation’s largest city, check out the Garden of the Mandarin Yu and ride along the riverside boulevard, known as the Bund. There’s also an optional tour to see the Terracotta Warriors.

The trip is open to anyone (you don’t have to be a chamber member to participate), and the OC chamber will be traveling with chamber members from California and Washington State. Similar tours start at around $3K, but the chamber’s fee is  $2,199 per couple or $2,699 per individuals.

For more information, meet at the chamber conference room Feb. 7 at 10 a.m.

  • Sneak Peek: “Dallas” Film Set in BAD

The show's new stars, Josh Henderson and Julie Gonzalo, on the set of the new "Dallas" TV series in the BAD

I quite literally got a behind-the-scenes peek at the filming of the new “Dallas” TV series in the Bishop Arts District this morning. We’d gotten word that the crew would be filming from 7 to 11 a.m. I showed up around 9:15, and with the guidance of DPD got a front-row parking space right in front of Hunky’s. (I was assuming I’d have to walk 40 blocks due to hundreds of onlookers.)

I grabbed my camera, headed North on Bishop, and proceeded to prance right in the middle of the set without realizing it. Errrr, why did no one stop me? I squatted to pull out my camera, when an really nice guy explained that I was right in the middle of the shot and asked if I would kindly step into the alley by Eno’s. My bad.

You see, it was an easy oops to make. There were people lining the sidewalks, hiding in alleys and stores, sitting at tables. I assumed these were bystanders — they were all dressed very Oak Cliff-ish. Little did I know they were ALL extras or crewmembers. I’d just assumed OC had come out to watch the production.

I shot for about 20 minutes or so, before some guy radioed the guy next to me and told me to stop shooting. But, thankfully, they didn’t tell me I couldn’t use what I’d already shot.

  • Texas Theatre is Launching a Book Club

Whoa, there. I’m a nerd with vices, yes, but nothing sounds like more fun to me than a barroom book club.

The Texas Theatre Book Club, which meets at the theater’s bar, is brand new, “for lovers of books, wine, beer, whiskey, and popcorn,” (says a Facebook page, where new members can join up) with a mission to “engage in thoughtful discussion about challenging, original, important books that are enjoyed by a fire while sipping wine.”

    See you there?

  • What’s Cookin’ in The Cliff: Holiday Edition

    Dear, sweet readers:

We’ll be out of the office until Jan. 2, but we won’t leave you to your own devices. If you’re looking for something interesting to do between Christmas and New Years Day, we have a few ideas for you. If we missed your shindig, the comments are open!

Members of the Hampton Hills Neighborhood Association should grab a bottle of vino and head to the annual mixer tonight. The party starts at 5 p.m.

The big ticket on Christmas Eve is going to be the live nativity at Kessler Park United Methodist Church. The front lawn comes alive at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Don’t miss it!

Looking for something a little different? Cantor Richard Cohn will be visiting the Oak Cliff Lions Club on Dec. 28 with the Temple Emanu-El choir. As with all Lions Club meetings, head to the Weiss Building at Methodist Dallas Medical Center at noon.

Three amazing local acts are booked at the Kessler Theater on Dec. 30, and if you don’t have your tickets already, you best get at it! Don’t miss Seryn, Doug Burr (love him!), and David Ramirez. The show kicks off at 8:15 p.m.

Want to enjoy all the New Years Eve festivities but don’t want to spend half the evening parking and driving? Hop on the free party trolley for Cliff Crawl 2011 from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. Stops include the Belmont A Go-Go party, the Kessler Theater, the Texas Theatre, and the Bishop Arts District.

As always, have a safe and happy holiday season, take plenty of pictures, and send them to us at editor@peoplenewspapers.com so you can get your mug in the paper.

  • Barak Epstein Has Colorful Filmography

As I was perusing pictures from the Oak Cliff Chamber of Commerce Awards ceremony, I did a Google Images search for Barak Epstein, one of the Texas Theatre operators, just to be sure I knew what he looked like. Said search yielded the poster you see here for Prison-A-Go-Go!, a movie Epstein wrote and directed that was released in 2003. IMDb.com describes it as “a women-in-prison action comedy featuring girls running amok! Multiple Shower Scenes! Kung Fu Food Fights! Mutant Zombies! Evil Scientists, Prominent Product Placement, and Mud Wrastlin!” According to the same website, Epstein has directed two other films: Cornman: American Vegetable Hero and Blood on the Highway. I’ll have to add all three to my Netflix queue.
