  • Turner House to Host Kevin Sloan Thursday

As part of of the spring Salon Series and Centennial Celebration, Turner House will host Dallas-based landscape architect and urban planner Kevin Sloan.

Sloan’s presentation “Looking Back to See Ahead” will offer global and local perspectives on historical issues that compelled the modern world to change. Further, Sloan will delve into the role history might play in finding a way forward, and he’ll examine some of the reasons “going back” may no longer be an option.

Sloan is the author of an ongoing series of writings called Notational Drawings and is owner of the award-winning architectural firm Kevin Sloan Studio. Using information gathered from his research, he will speculate on solutions to the problems that we face today.

The presentation will conclude with simple and practical things Oak Cliff homeowners can do that are beautiful, useful, and productive.

The doors will open at 7 p.m., and the program will begin at 7:30. Tickets are $20 for non-Society members and $15 for members and students. You can purchase tickets here or at the door.

  • Last Chance to See ‘Dia de los Ninos’

This weekend is your last opportunity to check out the annual “Dia de los Ninos” art exhibit at the Oak Cliff Cultural Center. The works of students from Rosemont, Anson Jones, and George Peabody elementary will be on display.

The students have created works through a variety of mediums — sculpture, paintings, creative masks, to unorthodox “junk” art.

Madelyn Jones, a 10-year-old Rosemont student, is displaying her “Chinese Lady,” completely composed of junk — refashioned items that most would likely pitch.

“I know I want to be an artist when I grow up,” Madelyn said. “It’s a way for me to show what’s on my mind and show people what I’m like. It’s a way for me to express my feelings.”

Rosemont art teacher Kellie Lawson has played an integral role since the show’s inception. “The show is a lot of work, but very much worth it to see the smiles on the children’s faces,” Lawson said.

Tomorrow is the last day of the exhibit, with a reception for the students to be held at 6 p.m. at the Cultural Center at 223 W. Jefferson Blvd.

  • What’s Cookin’ In The Cliff This Weekend?

Looking for a super fab way to enjoy your Saturday and Sunday? Head to the Bishop Arts District for the Urban Street Bazaar (Sat. noon to 8 p.m.; Sun. noon to 4 p.m.). More than 50 local artists will be selling their uber-cool handmade and vintage wares in the streets. The shops and restaurants will be open with special sales and menus. The bazaar will also have pet adoptions and is dog friendly, so bring Fido for a good time, and prepare to load up on handmade goodness!

Head to Sweet 200 on Saturday evening for the Kings Highway Conservation District’s annual silent auction and party (doors open at 6 p.m.). Sponsor Chelsmati’s Wine Market will be hosting a “wine pull” (just in case you’re like me a don’t know what a wine pull is — attendees can buy a cork for $10; the cork will match a $10 bottle of wine or a $20 to $30 bottle). Other goodies up for grabs: Councilman Scott Griggs, Commissioner Elba Garza, and Sheriff Lupe Valdez donated a dinner (or lunch) for two — with them; a night at the Belmont or the Mansion; restaurant bundles, including a sizable donation from Hattie’s; Byron Nelson tickets; and Kings Highway’s own Jonathan Braddick has donated 15 hours of handyman work. The event will help the neighborhood raise money for community projects, including the North Polk Street Beautification endeavor, as well as bicycle infrastructure within Kings Highway.

  • Oak Cliff Resident Knits Uteruses For Perry

Interesting. Oak Cliff’s own Kimberlyn Crowe is part of a knitting group that will mail hand-crafted uteri to Rick Perry and other lawmakers who are under fire for their stance on funding cuts to women’s health care programs, and for limiting access to birth control.

As Crowe told WFAA, “The statement is: ‘Get your hands off my uterus!’”

You can read more about the project here.

  • Watch Scott and Nicole Horn Tear Down a Scaled Down Version of The High Five

Fascinating work! Scott says the pair spent 100 hours on this floating High Five installation for a show. Watch them disassemble it in reverse in about 4 minutes.

  • Shepard Fairey Likes Us, He Really Likes Us

I was in the doghouse yesterday morning, so I suggested to my lady that we head to brunch. Booze and breakfast always seem to thaw even the hardest freeze, so I hoped it could pull me back to her good graces.

We went to Smoke, and it worked. On the way out, I checked our Oak Cliff People box outside, to make sure no one has tagged “4:20″ on it, or anything equally hilarious. I found two Shepard Fairey stickers, which I let slide.

I guess we can count ourselves as part of his mural brigade, right?

  • Hello, My Name is Joanna And I’m a Yarnaholic

I made these baby socks just a few days before my son Cooper was born.

So, I have a yarn problem.

I am a knitting addict and yarn tourist. I have between five and 10 projects on the needles at all times. I have a ridiculous yarn and fiber stash. Yarn store owners know me on a first-name basis.

Which leads me to my problem: There is no yarn store in Oak Cliff! Yes, you can learn how to knit at Oil and Cotton, but you can’t get your yarn fix there. You can buy fabric and learn to sew at Make and Made, but I haven’t seen any yarn on the shelves.

I find it ridiculous that there are so many crafty people in North Oak Cliff, and yet the closes yarn store is in Uptown (the Shabby Sheep). Not that I don’t love the Shabby Sheep, I just wish there was a yarn store close by.

Anyone else feel the same way? What kind of business do you think needs to open in North Oak Cliff?

  • What’s Cookin’ in The Cliff?

Weather forecasts are predicting another rainy weekend for Dallas. It’s a bummer if your primary mode of transportation is a bicycle, because there’s a lot to do this weekend and you’re going to get soaked going back and forth.

It’s also the end of Spring Break for a lot of people. So, there’s that.

Gary Garrison is speaking tonight at the Bishop Arts Theater Center. He’ll be discussing growing new audiences and developing the theater. Head over at 7 p.m. to hear him do his thing.

I’m just going to assume that, if you’re going to be at the Greenville Avenue St. Paddy’s Day parade, you’re going to be riding your bike. From my perspective, there’s really no other reason to be at that drunk-fest.

Locally, there is fun to be had tomorrow at the Winnetka Heights wine tasting. No, there aren’t Irish wines (unless you count whisky as a wine, and then the answer is yes). But there’s plenty fun to be had!

But if you’re looking to do something a little more low-key, Preservation Dallas has your number. There’ll be a tour of the Calvary Baptist Church, which is currently preparing for a wide-reaching restoration. Head over to 1822 West Tenth Street at 10:30 a.m.

  • Fort Worth Avenue Group Could Fund Your Art

Are you an artist? Do you have an idea for a piece that could help beautify Fort Worth Avenue/Commerce Street? Would you like $6,000 to make that idea a reality?

Then you have less than 48 hours to submit a proposal to the Fort Worth Avenue Development Group.
