What’s Cookin’ in The Cliff
It’s a little wet out there today, folks. Your best bet is to find someplace with some good bites and good beer.In that vein, Kings Highway Conservation District is having their happy hour tonight at 6 p.m. Head over to 635 N. Montclair Ave. for the festivities.
Also at 6 p.m. this evening, Oak Cliff Cultural Center will open a new exhibit called “Concrete Roses.” See the powerful work of Mark Crow and Violet Gutierrez tonight.
Itching for a case of the heebie jeebies? The Texas Theatre will screen “The Innkeepers” tonight starting at 6 p.m.

Do you miss Bar 828? Michael Martensen’s Hid In 2612 opens tonight at 8 p.m. in the lounge space next to Jay Jerrier’s Cane Rosso in Deep Ellum. I know, it’s in Deep Ellum, but Amy Cowan assures me that there will be plenty of Oak Cliff folks headed out. Besides that, it’s only open for four evenings, unless you’re one of the lucky few who booked the spot for a private event.
There’s so much going on this weekend, so let’s just hit the highlights:
“Five Photographers” opens at 6 p.m. Saturday at Haley-Henman Gallery.
Stevens Park Estates Neighborhood Association is hosting their membership party at 1943 W. Colorado Blvd. The fun starts at 7 p.m.
The Kessler will be underwater with great Texas acts, including The O’s, Warren Hood & The Goods, and Gaston Light. Doors open at 6, seats at 7, Show at 8 p.m.
If the Super Bowl’s not your thing, perhaps you should try your hand at crafting felted flowers at Oil and Cotton this at 3 p.m. Sunday.
If the Super Bowl is your thing, the Texas Theatre is showing the game on it’s big screen starting at 5 p.m. Head upstairs for Kimono Club, where they’ll be showing “Female Convict Scorpion: Jailhouse 41″ at 8 p.m. There’s plenty of sake and karaoke to go around.

Shepard Fairey Finishes West Dallas Mural
I had to make a stop over on Singleton today to check out Shepard Fairey’s work for myself. While the artist was supervising another mural on the southern facade of the same building, this one on the eastern wall was nearing completion. As of this afternoon, this mural is complete.
Have you seen any of Fairey’s work in person yet?

Obregon Pulls Up Stakes on Tyler Street For Belmont Hotel
Kevin Obregon, perennial Con Artist and octopus fan, has vacated The Cube Creative on Tyler Street for an artist in residency program at the Belmont Hotel.
“I have set up a new studio at The Belmont Hotel in the hills of West Dallas where I will be helping to develop a new Artist-in-Residency geared toward showcasing local artists,” Obregon said in a Facebook note.
“Though I will miss my neighbors in the Tyler Davis area, I am not abandoning you by any means,” Obregon continued. “I will always show you love, as well as funneling every guest and culture-seeker that comes through the Belmont to your eclectic offerings, for true-to-form in what the hotel stands for, people seek out authenticity, creativity and personality.”
Additionally, Obregon said he will be helping street artist Shepard Fairey as he looks to cover the walls of Dallas.
“I will of course still be painting, drawing, sculpting, writing and muraling,” he added. “In fact, as of this writing, I will be assisting in the execution of Sheperd Fairey’s stenciled murals in a matter of hours, thanks to the Dallas Contemporary as well as working on a new, somewhat surrealist painting depicting theMother Goose nursery rhyme, ‘The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe.’”

Street Artist Shepard Fairey to Invade Oak Cliff
According to Michael Granberry at the DMN, Shepard Fairey, who is known for his Andre the Giant “OBEY” designs and the iconic poster he designed for President Obama’s campaign, will be creating a dozen or more murals throughout Dallas.
Sites include Oak Cliff, Deep Ellum, and West Dallas, Granberry said. “Highland Park is not on the list,” the writer added.
Um, duh?
In any case, keep your eyes peeled. Fairey will be spinning at the Dallas Contemporary on Friday, so surely we should be seeing his work popping up on a blank wall near you.

Got Plans for Spring Break?
I don’t have kids, meaning I probably can’t attend Oil and Cotton’s spring break art camps without unsettling a few people. The lineup looks like a blast, though. (“Lovely Leather Bag Camp,” anyone?)
Anyway. Registration is now open for you and yours.

What’s Cookin’ in The Cliff
It’s past noon, y’all, so it’s officially time to start planning your weekend. We here at the Oak Cliff People HQ have a few suggestions for you:First, it’s beautiful outside, so find a patio that serves cold beer. You’ve got plenty of options in the area, including Bar Belmont, which will have Glenn Farris at the mic this evening starting at 7 p.m.
If you’d rather spend your evening getting your mind bended, head over to the Texas Theatre for a screening of Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles. The film starts at 6:30, making the Texas a great place to grab some drinks after giving your coworkers the peace-out.
Otherwise, you should head over to the Kessler Theater for Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks, which starts at 7 p.m.
SundaySaturday, head over to Repotted at 11 a.m. to talk trees with Harold Spiegel of Preservation Tree Service. Attend the talk and get 10 percent off your tree purchase.Tomorrow evening, well, let’s just say your dance card is full. Kick off the evening with Michael Anderson as he opens his show at Mighty Fine Arts at 6 p.m.
Then, prepare to have your face rocked off at the Kessler Theater. The Killdares, North Texas’ most awesome Celtic rock group, will be playing at 7 p.m. If you’ve never seen them live, you’re missing out on a really good time.
If Celtic rock and men in Utilikilts isn’t your thing, Saturday night is open mic night at the Texas Theatre. That’s fun wrapped up in a belly-busting package, folks.
If we left out your awesome event, let us know in the comments!

Decorazon Presents “1939″
Her website gives it away. Michele Mikesell is a busy gal. And before she wraps up a show in Oklahoma City, the Oak Cliff artist will have another exhibition here in Dallas.
“1939,” a collection of Mikesell’s new works — one supposedly packed with “old Dallas lore” — opens Jan. 20 at Studios 1019. The show, which runs by appointment through the end of the month, is a production of former Bishop Arts tenant Decorazon Gallery. And Decorazon is now a traveling outfit, if you’re wondering, with gigs all over the world.
Check out the “1939″ Facebook page for more about the show.

Pin Show Designer Lineup Annoucned
The 2012 Pin Show is coming folks, and according to Jim Duran of DFW Style Daily, the designers are an interesting bunch.
The fashion blogger put up a short Q&A with each of the five designers. My favorite:
“I work in a resale shop, and have collected quite a few broken garments that were destined for the dumpster. They might be the essence of this collection, 100% recycled and transformed. I find inspiration in almost everything, which make me a hoarder extraordinaire.”
As a fellow hoarder, I salute you, Megan! Except, I hold on to old knitting needles, garage-sale yarn (even acrylic!), and old formal gowns.

The Oak Cliff Cultural Center announced today that its “La Virgen de Guadalupe” exhibit has been extended to Jan. 20, when the Jefferson Boulevard facility will host a closing reception from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibition is curated by Jose Vargas and features a variety of artistic depictions of the virgin of Guadalupe, including the one seen here by Genaro Hernández.Meanwhile, I got Oak Cliff Cultural Center manager Rafael Tamayo on the phone to ask whatever happened to the “Tiny Spokes” exhibit of bicycle art that was supposed to open this evening. He told me it’s been pushed back to the spring.
