  • What’s Cookin’ in The Cliff This Weekend?

The backdrop Zoe Muth performs against tonight won't be quite as striking, but it should still be a good time. (Photo: Zoe Muth)

The backdrop at Zoe Muth’s performance tonight won’t be quite as striking, but it should still be a good time.

Father’s Day is on Sunday, and if you don’t have plans for dad yet, we’ve got plenty of options. Man of Steel just happens to open this weekend, so why not take the Superman in your life to a viewing?

The Dallas County Community College District is pairing with DISD schools to provide a high-school programs showcase from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this morning at El Centro West. It’s never too early to start thinking about college, and DCCCD provides many ways for high-school students to get a head start and begin getting college credit before they’ve even graduated.

The latest superhero installment, Man of Steel, has finally arrived, and Texas Theatre is giving you plenty of times to see it this weekend. It’s showing at 7 and 10  p.m. tonight.

Madison King performs at 8 p.m. tonight at Bar Belmont.

Try saying “Dave Alvin and the Guilty Ones” and “Zoe Muth and the Lost High Rollers” five times fast. Actually don’t. Anyway, both long-and-curiously named groups will perform at the Kessler Theater at 8 p.m. tonight, and if their music is anything like their names, you should be in for an entertaining evening.

  • Thief Tries to Steal Car, Leaves Behind ID, Charger

Here’s your weekly preview of some of the shenanigans going on in your neighborhood.

Between 1 and 6:30 p.m. on June 3, a burglar broke into a black 2010 Ford pickup in the 400 block of South Zang Boulevard and stole a $200 Garmin GPS.

You just have one more weekend to find the perfect gift for dad. Feeling uninspired? Check out our gift guide in today’s paper for some special presents dad will love.

As Sarah mentioned here, Cory Chalmers, he of A&E’s Hoarders fame, will speak at the third annual Southwest Conference on Hoarding at Methodist Dallas Medical Center today. The conference began at 8 a.m. and goes all day, but if you call Ricardo Aguilar (214-871-2420 ext. 118) you may still be able to get in for the lunch and chance to hear Chalmers speak.

Shortly after writing 4.48 Psychosis, British playwright Sarah Kane committed suicide. So it goes without saying that it’s some heavy stuff, and probably not suited for a first date. Or a second. Anyway, the newly-formed theater troupe Davis Street Collective will present the work at 8 p.m. tonight at Davis Foundry Gallery. The show is free, but seating is limited and must be reserved by emailing reservations@davisstreetcollective.org,

Hunter Hendrickson has been called a “local rising star” many times; catch him at Bar Belmont at 8 p.m. tonight to decide for yourself if the hype is true.

  • Man Leaves Phones on Pump, Makes it Easy for Thief

Here’s a look at some of the crimes that didn’t make it into the paper this week.

At around 10 p.m. on May 27, police seized a Beretta pistol from a miscreant in the 600 block of North Lancaster Avenue.

At around 5:15 a.m. on May 28, a resident of the 600 block of Blaylock Drive was woken by her house alarm sounding, and when she looked out the window she saw a man running from her house. Here’s a look at some options to help you get the new weekend (and new month!) started right.

The Charming Gardeners, who bill themselves as “Big grooves, big guitars, and a beautiful girl with a big voice,” will take the stage at Bar Belmont tonight at 8 p.m.

Paul Thorn, hailed the “Mark Twain of Americana,” is bringing his unique mix of blues and rock and roll to the Kessler Theater at 8 p.m. tonight. Bonnie Bishop opens.

Up-and-coming director Conor Allyn teamed up with his father, Rob Allyn to write the screenplay for Java Heat, a thriller about a Muslim detective team who pairs up with an American to find out the criminals behind a string of terrorist acts in Indonesia. If that sounds interesting to you, it opens at the Texas Theatre tonight at 7, followed by a showing of Animal House at 9:15 p.m. You’ll probably want to arrive in costume and stick around after Animal House ends — the toga party begins at 11 p.m.
