BAD’s Soda Gallery Closed
A few weeks ago, a friend from New York and I went to Lockhart Smokehouse for lunch, then bounced our way through the Bishop Arts District for a few minutes.
“A whole store dedicated to soda? Really?”
That was his reaction to the Soda Gallery, which, up until that point, I hadn’t really thought of as strange. But apparently his intuitions were right. According to City of Ate, the place was completely empty yesterday, just a sugary, pre-diabetic memory to everyone who passed through its doors.

Pig Stand Featured in Dallas Museum of Art Exhibit
The Advocate beat us to it, but we still wanted to bring your attention to the Dallas Museum of Art’s George Grosz exhibit, “Flower of the Prairie.”
The part that’s most interesting to us is Grosz’s “Refreshments on the Way,” which showcases Pig Stand No. 2, which used to be located at Colorado and Jefferson. The Oak Cliff landmark supposedly invented onion rings and Texas toast, which brought two things to mind to Dan and me:
1. When were onion rings invented, and can we do an anniversary story soon? (Answer: 1920s, so no.)
2. Isn’t Texas toast just thick bread? Seems sort of dubious that someone “invented” it.
Anyway, the exhibit runs through August 28.

Brew Riot: Not a Disaster
Last week, I expressed some misgivings about the Bishop Arts District’s Brew Riot, particularly the “let’s drink some beers then go for a run” portion of the event.
But Andrew ran it this weekend without a hitch, so I was wrong. I still reserve the right to question the drinky run every year, though, because someday someone will boot.
We’ll have a bunch of photos and a first-person story by Andrew in this week’s edition, but if you can’t wait to see what happened, head to SideDish, where friend-of-the-program Matt Shelley posted some glamour shots.

Lockhart’s Fleischman Named Top Pitmaster
Lockhart Smokehouse’s Will Fleischman was recently named one of the top pitmasters in America by Southern Living magazine.
“People need to humble themselves to the experience,” he told the magazine. “Success depends on how many mistakes you’re willing to make.”
Fleischman is one of two Texas pitmasters on the list; Aaron Franklin of Austin’s Franklin BBQ is the other. Though the list seems a bit “Hmm, we need a pitmaster from every state across the South, just pick whoever will make a good picture” it’s still nice to see a local face.

OOCCL Opposes Fracking
In a vote Monday night, the Old Oak Cliff Conservation League voted to oppose hydraulic fracturing. Below is their letter to Mayor Mike Rawlings.
The city drilling task force will make its recommendations to city officials today on the matter. Educate yourself:

Bolsa Mercado Hosting Fundraiser Thursday
First, watch that video.Okay, does that seem like an organization you’d support? If not, hit the bricks, I have no time for you. If you’re still here, Bolsa Mercado is hosting a fundraiser for Seeds of Africa Thursday night. It’s a four-course dinner, for $75. That’s steep, but really it’s what, two nights out drinking? Three seasons of Breaking Bad on DVD?
For more information and reservations, head to the event’s PreKindle page.

Brew Riot May Lead to Brew Vomit
When I was a reporter in DC, I covered an annual event where high schoolers would pound a Chipotle burrito, then run a mile. Many, many students threw up.
If that sounds vaguely interesting to you, maybe you should sign up for the 1.1-mile Beer Run, held in conjunction with Sunday’s Brew Riot in Bishop Arts. You run, you drink beer, you run some more, you drink some more. Since most participants will be adults (ideally, from a legal standpoint), the vomiting will hopefully be kept at a minimum.
For more info, head to the Go Oak Cliff website.

Sausage Party Coming to Trinity Groves
Yesterday brought the news that Dallas-based Zaccanelli Food Group had bought Hofmann Sausage Company, a Syracuse, New York-based purveyor of tubular meats.
Today’s news is a little more interesting, to me at least. Seems Hofmann is going to open a restaurant in the new Trinity Groves project, at the foot of Large Marge.
“We plan to transition the brand from a regional icon to a national and international brand, while maintaining the Hofmann family tradition of quality and exceptional customer service,” said Frank Zaccanelli, in a statement. “Hofmann Sausage Company has a strong brand, quality products and a loyal fan base. By leveraging these factors and increasing product placement, through our wholesale outlets and the development of our Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) concept created by the famed restaurateur Phil Romano, we plan to take the company to the next level of brand recognition and profitability.”
Sausage, with Four Corner Brewing Company next door? Seems like a block I may be frequenting more and more.

Canyon Project Expansion Approved
An expansion to The Canyon’s site on Westmoreland Road was unanimously approved by the City Council Wednesday, after minor amendments by Councilman Scott Griggs.
The nine-acre addition is in the northeast corner of the project, and currently includes a low-rise garage building. Griggs’ amendments included the elimination of medical waste incinerators from the site’s accepted uses, and a definition of wind turbines.
Gas drilling is also not allowed on the nearly 200-acre site, Griggs said.
