Slideshow: Lone Star, the White Buffalo, at Fuel City

(Staff Photo: Chuck Cox)

Did you catch that white buffalo at Fuel City? I haven’t, and some of us might not ever get a chance. Good thing staff writer Chuck Cox has our back.

A week ago, Fuel City owner John Benda added a pregnant white buffalo named Lone Star to the pasture of longhorn cattle and donkeys behind his Riverfront Boulevard gas station. According to news reports, Benda’s listened to pleas from animal-rights activists and American Indians — some who consider white buffalo sacred — and he plans to relocate Lone Star to a sanctuary.

Critics accuse Benda of using the buffalo as a promotional gimmick; but one could argue that Benda was simply making one of nature’s wonders accessible to the public (though, arguably, too close to Fuel City’s taco stand for comfort). Nonetheless, Chuck was out there this week to take a few photos. Enjoy his slideshow. Share your thoughts with us.
