U Stop Fina Set to go Before City Council Again

U Stop Fina, a neighborhood convenience store near Sunset High School, will go before the City Council on Wednesday in another attempt to secure a permit to sell alcohol.

Both the City Plan Commission and city staff recommend approval for the permit, but the store’s request has been a hot topic among residents in the neighborhood. Parents have spoken out saying alcohol does not need to be sold so close to a high school, and on the other side of the fence, regular customers have rallied to support the owner.

The request went before the City Council on Jan. 9, but it was taken under advisement and held for another day. As of now, a decision is scheduled for Wednesday.

What say you? Are you planning on attending Wednesday’s meeting to make sure your side is represented? If so, the public hearing starts at 1 p.m. at City Hall.

Also, be sure to pick up a copy of this week’s edition of Oak Cliff People to read Michelle Saunder’s account of the hearing.

This petition will be denied tomorrow and the owners have already been informed. So, the showdown you expect tomorrow is not going to happen. There is much more to the story than what you have decided to report, but for now this is a victory for our neighborhood. It’s not just about what everyone else is allowed to sell… it’s about responsibility of business ownership and how to be a positive impact on the neighborhood. U Stop Fina continually fails on both these fronts.
