Expensive Bricks Stolen From 600 Elsbeth Street
The Dallas Morning News reports that demolition is under way on Lee Harvey Oswald’s former abode at 600 Elsbeth Street. Onlookers were on hand, they say, to grab a brick and save a piece of history before everything is gone.
Last Friday, however, someone thought they would get in on the collection-action first, stealing 30 bricks valued at $60,000 from the property, the Dallas Police Department reports. I’m a bit confused about how 30 bricks from a demolition site could be worth so much, but maybe they were new bricks intended for restoration purposes and not actually discarded bricks from the dilapidated site.
Update: Jane Bryant, the property’s owner, clarified the figure, telling us that between 3,000 and 4,000 bricks were stolen. According to neighbors, the site’s workers were selling the bricks to passersby for $20 apiece.
