Photographer Highlights ‘Elves in Disguise’; Home-Renovation Reveal Slated for Thursday

When we printed this photo with a Dec. 7 story about a nonprofit called The Happiness Group, it lacked something important: a byline for photographer Kevin B. Rusk. We’ll have a formal correction in this week’s paper.

Rusk, who hails from Oak Cliff, was kind enough to wield his camera on our behalf a few weeks ago; that’s when Happiness Group founder Mohamed Sharaf (the young man in the photo), visited a needy South Dallas home that will get a huge renovation this Thursday.

Aptly dubbed Elves in Disguise, the annual project is the main charity event for New Hope Foundation — a nonprofit led by Kip and Suzi Petroff, who’ve become mentors to Sharaf and his own organization. The remodeling they provide with the help of about 100 volunteers is transformative; each room goes from sad shape to the caliber of something you’d see in a design magazine, and the beneficiary family even gets a Christmas tree, stockings, presents, and educational support.

You’ll find details (and a pretty emotional video) here.
