PSA: Copying and Selling Stolen Media Is Not Legal

While going through police reports yesterday, I came across this gem regarding the creation and distribution of pirated media. According to the report, when police searched the vehicle, they found a backpack containing a laptop and approximately 100 CD’s and 86 DVD’s in it. It’s probably not even necessary to say that there were multiple copies of each title, many of which are still in theaters.

The thief admitted to selling the stolen goods out of his apartment, but also said (this is my favorite part) that he “did not know that selling these was illegal.”

So just in case anyone else out there is unclear on the legality of  filming, copying, and selling movies or music, I would like to let you know that it is absolutely illegal. If caught, you’re looking at potential state and federal charges and anything from years in prison to hefty fines.

Just say no.
