Where Will You Seek Treats Tonight?

Is there a particular Oak Cliff neighborhood that offers the best trick-or-treating? Is the candy selection better in, say, Winnetka Heights than it is Stevens Park Estates? Are you more likely to see creepy decorations in East Kessler Park, for example, than in Wynnewood North?

It’s really sad that Halloween and Trick or Treat has lost it’s meaning. We live in Kidd Springs near Kidd Springs and Tyler and no longer participate. It is ridiculous that there are school/church buses, vans, trucks, and cars that park at the parking lot at Kidd Springs Park or on Tyler and hundreds of kids that do not live in our neighborhood come to our neighborhood on one night “to get the best candy”. Think I am exaggerating? Drive by tonight at 7:00 and take a look for yourself.
We understand if it is kids from Elmwood, Sunset, etc. but when they are coming from East Dallas, South Oak Cliff, etc., we have a problem with that. We really wish there were some way to implement a wrist band ID system like some neighborhoods are doing to identify the neighborhood kids and keep the opportunist away. As it is, we cannot justify spending $100+ on candy to make sure we have enough for kids we will never see until next year or teenagers that walk up with bags and no costume and fearing if we call them out and do not give them candy, our house will be egged.
Instead, we will do as we did last year. We will not be able to carve a pumpkin or decorate our house as a sign of participation. We will be forced to sit in the back room with the TV on and at a low volume or go out to see a movie to avoid hearing the knocking on the door or ringing of the doorbell. We’re really not grumpy old people and wish circumstances were different.
Maybe some year in the future, we will be able to participate and tell our NEIGHBORHOOD kids how cute they are as a princess or how scary they are as a vampire.

We live in Winnetka Heights. Sadly, we too have have stopped doing the Halloween routine, mostly for the reasons described above. We don’t mind kids coming from other neighborhoods, and if it were just kids, that would be fine. However, when parents are hauling an infant who is probably not even on solid food yet, and collecting candy for said infant – that was the last straw. Not to mention some kids (and adults) circling back for second and third rounds. It’s too bad, because we did enjoy seeing the kids in their costumes.

We live on Colorado Blvd in East Kessler and actually look forward to it every year. We invite a lot of people, throw a party in the front yard (drinks/pizza), and take turns handing out candy. It’s a lot of fun.
