Look What’s Headed Our Way…
Apparently, people still like to Boot Scoot. And the Oak Cliff Coalition for the Arts is ready to show us how. On Aug. 25, the group is hosting “Texas Stars, Boots, & BBQ” — a talent show and fundraiser for scholarships. The event will kick off at JD’s BBQ & Grill (305 Centre St.) at 5 p.m. with a happy hour and silent auction. There will be a spectacular talent show, beginning at 7 p.m., starring the likes of State Rep. Roberto Alonzo, Councilwoman Monica Alonzo, Constable Beth Villarreal, and a number of other elected officials and community leaders. (And, yes, there will be awards dished out to talent competitors.) And, at last, the boot-scootin’ boogie dance begins at 8 p.m.
Word is that the coalition is still recruiting talent for the event, but already in the line-up are: Constable Beth Villarreal will debut (as an actress) in a murder mystery; Rep. Roberto Alonzo is pondering whether to sing a hit song or play a musical instrument; Councilwoman Monica Alonzo is tuning up her voice to sing the Spanish tune “La Misma”; Marta Alameel will play the piano; Cesar Calderon and his daughter will be rockin’ out with guitars; and Johnny Rodriguez plans on dancing a Tejano polka. The coalition assures us that more acts are in the works.
Big D’s “Big Shots & Show-offs” (as the coalition has coined competitors) will be helping the group raise money for scholarships. Tickets are $25 per person or $45 per couple; student and children’s tickets are only $5. For more information, call OCCA at: 972-900-1630.
