Mr. Gonzalez repeatedly mentioned a cutback of 4 firemen per station. It wasn't clear until the end of the meeting it was actually 4 firemen per shift - 12 firemen per station. Mr. Gonzalez was proud of the DFD hiring 200 new firemen, and said there would be no layoffs as a result of this move. Over and over again, people asked how this saves $2 million. Bottom line after nearly an hour of the dog and pony show, with relocation of 12 firemen from each of 2 fire stations, DFD will only be hiring 200 minus 24 firemen or 176. Okay, fine, but why say you are hiring 200 if you are only hiring 176? And then there is the issue of response time. Mr. Gonzalez repeatedly said Dallas response times were faster than national average. One very astute audience member asked for statistics specifically for the fire stations affected by this cutback and what the distribution of response times is. Just throwing out a number which is an average for the entire city is meaningless. This isn't our first rodeo. Thank goodness we have Scott Griggs, Delia Jasso and many very smart and very concerned firemen and neighbors looking out for our community!
