  • Boy Scout Recruitment Event is Tomorrow

Dang. An all-day Boy Scout/Cub Scout recruiting event tomorrow at Kessler Park United Methodist sounds a whole lot cooler than anything I ever experienced as a Brownie.

From 9 a.m. on., you — provided you’re a boy-child, or perhaps a parent — can take part in tomahawk throwing, caveman golf, Ultimate Frisbee, and “Super Soaker wars and water balloon wars,” said parent Laura Walsh, who’s helping to organize the event. There’ll by fly-tying and branding demonstrations, plus bratwurst, hot dogs, iced watermelon, and cobbler to keep you going. Come nightfall, Walsh added, the group plans screen movies and drink homemade root beer.

The recruitment drive is in conjunction with Troop 5 and Pack 4 (Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, respectively). Visitors can “come anytime they want to,” Walsh said, “and enjoy whatever portion of it they want to.”

    Now you know.

  • City Budget – OC Be Heard!

If you missed the city-budget proposal meeting Tuesday, August 23, and/or the one that took place this past Wednesday, you have another opportunity to speak your mind about the 2011-12 city budget proposal.

This Monday, August 29, Scott Griggs will host another town-hall style budget meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the Hitt Auditorium (off of Colorado) at Methodist Dallas Medical Center.

For those of you not familiar with the proposed budget, there will be a brief presentation covering the major issues, or you can read my blog post from last week, in which I highlighted the critical components.

If you want your voice to be heard about issues affecting Oak Cliff or those facing all of Dallas, be sure to attend and speak your mind — before the budget goes back to the City Council for approval.

The ceremony was held in the sanctuary of Highland Park Presbyterian Church in Dallas at six o’clock in the evening. The Rev. Dr. Ronald Wesley Scates, The Rev. • SPE Conservation District Still In Limbo

When the City Council addressed the Stevens Park Estates Conservation District Overlay during this afternoon’s meeting, the chamber fell quiet.

After following this firestorm for some time now, I readily expected multiple parties “for” and “against” the conservation overlay to show up in full-force for one last-ditch effort to get their way.

    No so.

No one from either side of the debate was in attendance. In a matter of 60 seconds, Councilwoman Delia Jasso reported that the residents of Stevens Park Estates had not had a sufficient opportunity to work together to create a solution both parties could agree on. Residents cited the Fourth of July holiday (ONE day out of the summer, mind you) and personal vacations as the culprits. Hmm….

  • Commissioners Pick Redistricting Plan

Dallas’ redistricting commission sent a final map last night for the City Council’s approval — one that could reshuffle boundaries and racial demographics in districts 1 and 3, plus show a population jump of about 8,000 in the former and a drop of more than 11,000 residents in the latter.

We’ll break down the plan in Friday’s paper.

Said redistricting meeting went on for a cool five-and-a-half hours, by the way. At one point, District 8 commissioner Mary Hasan nestled into a blanket and seemed to fall asleep. Earlier, commissioners sang — and I mean hollered — the praises of South Oak Cliff resident Bill Betzen, who’d attended nearly every meeting prior, and submitted a map of his own that nearly made the final cut.

A former social worker, Betzen is a teacher at Quintanilla Middle School. He keeps a detailed blog about his redistricting efforts here.
