Norma/Mama Reflects on 55 Years of Change

If you’ve stolen so much as a passing glance at the Norma’s Cafe Twitter feed, you’re well aware this month marks the diner’s 55th anniversary. Owner Ed Murph runs the show now, and has since the mid-’80s, but I thought I’d track down the original Norma Manis today for some background.

Results:

At just shy of 78, she is A) a total firecracker and B) still slinging belt-busting Southern food.

For starters, drawled Manis, who runs the Mama’s Daughters Diner chain with offspring Nancy, Laurie, and Vickie, “I’m not Norma anymore. I’m Mama now. I sold my name when I sold that business.”

But she’ll tell you all about it just the same.

Pick up next Friday’s Oak Cliff People for the scoop.

It is with great sorrow I inform everyone of Mama’s (Norma Manis) passing. She passed away yesterday, 02/23/13, after a brief illness due to a stroke. We will all miss Mama, but Laurie, Nancy and Vickie are still with us and their resteraunts to keep her memory alive and well.
