Griggs Ousts Neumann
Just in case you were in a cave over the weekend…NEWSFLASH: Scott Griggs beat incumbent Dave Neumann for the District 3 City Council seat. By 11 p.m. on Saturday night all 56 precincts had reported: Griggs received 3,029 votes or 58%; Neumann received 2,180 votes or roughly 42%.
I was at the Griggs camp keeping tabs on the scene, and our staff photographer Chris McGathey was staked out at Neumann’s fiesta (or lack there of, in the end) at Ojeda’s Mexican cantina on West Jefferson Boulevard.
A few familiar faces in attendance at Griggs’ campaign headquarters: Edwin Cabaniss, Jason Roberts, Eric Cowan, former District 3 Councilman Ed Oakley, Dallas sheriff Lupe Valdez, Helen Spears, Raymond Crawford, and Richard Harris — not to mention Griggs’ entire fam. His mother Lynn was on cloud nine most of the night.
Griggs’ lil’ campaign house was jam-packed with supporters and friends, alike. If you recall from our April 29 article, the house’s front door is often inoperable, so supporters were spilling out the back door into the parking lot.
Neumann’s camp was just as packed with his supporters. His campaign memorabilia was dripping from every corner of the restaurant. Chris McGathey reported that Neumann conceded when 56 of the precincts had reported, and was tearful as he hugged his children and fellow supporters.
