North Oak Cliff Named “Best Place to Buy an Old Home”
According to Old Oak Cliff Conservation League president Michael Amonett, the neighborhood to which he has dedicated so much time and effort is finally getting the credit it deserves. After submitting a letter and photos to This Old House and PreservationDirectory.com (which you can read here), North Oak Cliff was chosen as the best place to buy an old house in Texas. That’s right. Our ‘hood beat other historic districts in Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, and Houston.
Now that’s what I call bragging rights! Congratulations!

How Many Vegan Pancakes Will You Eat to Win?
Start making room right now: Spiral Diner and Bakery will hold it’s annual birthday celebration/vegan pancake eating contest on Feb. 20. At the diner’s first birthday celebration, a cocky truck driver named Eric Mason took the top spot. This year, it’s anyone’s game.
I can say from experience that Spiral’s pancakes go down quite easy with some of their delicious coffee and juice, but there’s no way you can get me to shovel pancakes down my gullet until I toss my flapjacks. How about you? Are you going to take a shot at the title?

Sharing a Neighborhood Story
While my 16-month-old and I were on our walk to the park in Kessler Plaza, we crossed paths with an elderly Hispanic gentleman who we said hello to. He spoke some Spanish to my daughter with a smile and kept walking, and she turned to see where he was going and said “bye bye.” He then turned back around, still with a smile.
He took his wallet out, at which point I was anticipating him sharing his grandchildren’s photos, but instead he pulled out a dollar bill and handed it to my daughter. She held on so tight to that dollar, stopping every so often to look it over. She knew it was something special.
What a wonderful gesture!

Globetrotting Duo Visits Henderson Elementary
I’ve seen the Harlem Globetrotters twice: When I was about 6, accompanied by my equally excited dad, and yesterday at Henderson Elementary.
Actually, just two men arrived to represent the team, but the screams of sheer hysterical elation they drew from the crowd could’ve rivaled the Beatles’ arrival on U.S. soil. I do not kid.
Read this week’s issue of Oak Cliff People for more about Kevin “Special K” Daley, Kenny “Blenda” Rodriguez, and their very animated visit to Oak Cliff.
